Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a sung-through musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics), based on the biblical story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. The musical follows Joseph, the favourite son of Jacob, who receives a magnificent multi-coloured coat from his father. Joseph’s brothers become jealous, especially because of his prophetic dreams that suggest he will one day rule over them. Consumed by envy, they sell him into slavery and tell their father that he has been killed by a wild animal.

Taken to Egypt, Joseph is bought by the wealthy Potiphar and quickly earns his trust. However, after Potiphar’s wife falsely accuses Joseph of misconduct, he is imprisoned. While in prison, Joseph discovers he has a remarkable gift for interpreting dreams. His accurate interpretations of the dreams of two fellow prisoners eventually bring him to the attention of the Pharaoh. When Pharaoh is troubled by mysterious dreams that no one can explain, Joseph correctly predicts that Egypt will experience seven years of abundant harvest followed by seven years of famine. Impressed by his wisdom, Pharaoh appoints Joseph as his chief advisor, placing him in charge of preparing the kingdom for the coming crisis. During the famine, Joseph’s brothers travel to Egypt seeking food, unaware that the powerful official before them is the brother they betrayed years earlier. Joseph tests their honesty and loyalty before finally revealing his identity. Rather than seeking revenge, he forgives them, and the family is joyfully reunited.

The musical concludes with themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, hope, and the idea that difficult experiences can lead to unexpected opportunities. Told with humor and a wide variety of musical styles—including pop, rock, country, calypso, French ballad, and Elvis-inspired rock and roll—it is one of the most popular family musicals ever written.
